It is now getting into the summer months where most individuals will go out and search with their coin-shooters to find lost items that are just under the surface within about 18 inches. There are a lot of metal detectors that are sold every year just for that purpose. It does get you out into the fresh air and you get a lot of exercise that you would not normally get.

For the rest of us there are some things that you must be reminded of.

1. If you are searching on private property get the property owners permission and leave the property as you found it. Which means pick up your trash, refasten the cattle gates so that if it is a ranch then the ranchers cattle will not get out.

2. For individuals that are searching on BLM land which is public domain do not dig. The BLM does not recognize treasure trove rights even though there is no law governing treasure. The BLM will try and excerise rights that they do not have and they are not afraid to threaten you with all types threats. But if you choose to dig without having your bases covered and you are caught then you will pay a fine and can get upto 1 year in prison.
